Exciting Canadian Films at TIFF

Oh Canada! Where the weather is fucking cold and our filmmakers are dark, dark, dark...
The Toronto Film Festival (TIFF) has announced it's lineup and there are some promising Canadian horror/thrillers making their debut. Here's a couple of films that should have your attention.

THE EDITOR

Directed by Matthew Kennedy and Adam Brooks from Astron 6, the crazies that brought us FATHER'S DAY, have cast legendary Udo Kier in this highly anticipated feature. Synopsis: A one-time (and now one-handed) master film editor toiling in the cinematic sweatshops of 1970s Italy becomes the prime suspect in a series of brutal murders, in this loving tribute to/parody of the gory giallo thrillers of Mario Bava and Dario Argento.

STILL

A short film out of the Canadian Film Centre (CFC), screenplay by Slater Jewell-Kemker and Kaveh Mohebbi, directed by Slater Jewell-Kemker. Synopsis: In this psychological thriller with a sci-fi twist, a young couple takes a break from a road trip to walk through a wintery forest — where it soon becomes clear that their relationship is based on dangerously unbalanced power dynamics.

WHAT DOESN'T KILL YOU

Another Canadian short film produced by the CFC, created by writer/director Rob Grant. Synopsis: As their car burns on a remote road in the aftermath of a horrific accident, three bullied high school boys discover that they possess unique abilities. An inventive premise and well-honed script comes to life through the compelling performances of the film’s young leads.

Don't they look great!?! Looking forward to the release and getting my hands on these films. Although not in the thriller category, I must give a special shout-out to Calgary production company North Country Cinemas and AMPIA members Cameron Macgowan and Kyle Thomas, as they are the only Alberta project in the official TIFF selection.Way to represent!

Their feature "The Valley Below" co-stars singer/songwriter Kris Demeanor, who I met many years ago when he was double-billing with my aunt Wendy McNeill. He had the coolest pants ever. Very excited to see he's crossed over to acting. Trailer looks beautiful. Expecting good things from this one.
